Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson received a lesson in the importance of rhetoric this week from none other than the fine folks at Steak-umm.

Mr. DeGrasse Tyson, known for pontificating on subjects outside his professional expertise, essentially told 14.5 million Twitter followers that anything deemed “science” was “true” when the company chimed in with a clarification.

“The good thing about Science is that it’s true, whether or not you believe in it,” astrophysicist tweeted Sunday.

Steak-umm’s official Twitter account noted that such statements rhetorically contradict the scientific method. 

“Log off, bro,” the Steak-umm account responded Tuesday. “The irony of Neil‘s tweet is that by framing science itself as ‘true’ he’s influencing people to be more skeptical of it in a time of unprecedented misinformation. science is an ever refining process to find truth, not a dogma. no matter his intent, this message isn’t helpful.”

Supporters of the food brand congratulated it for unexpected philosophical gravitas, while critics claimed it was evidence of a “crazy Christian company.”

“Now that I know that @steak_umm is a crazy Christian company, I won’t be buying their product anymore,” one reader wrote, for example. “Thank you for outing yourself.”

The company embraced the feedback.

“Science itself isn’t ‘true.’ It’s a constantly refining process used to uncover truths based in material reality and that process is still full of misteaks,” the company responded with a cheeky misspelling of the word ‘mistake.’ “Neil just posts ridiculous sound bites like this for clout and he has no respect for epistemology.”
