MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - Authorities in New Hampshire are investigating after human remains were found near a recreational trail.

An identification has not been made and an investigation is ongoing, the Manchester Police Department said in a statement Saturday.

The remains were found near the Rockingham rail trail in the eastern part of Manchester, about 1,000 feet from an access gate on a local road. The trail is built on a former rail road corridor.

Someone who saw the remains and thought they might be human called authorities in the nearby town of Auburn to report them Friday night. Officers there determined the location was actually in Manchester and contacted that city’s police.

Personnel from the local medical examiner’s office were working at the location on Saturday.
