SOUTH POMFRET, Vt. (AP) - The Woodstock Inn and Resort has dropped a proposal for an off-road driving school at the Suicide Six ski area after outcry from Pomfret residents.
Town residents voiced anger and concern during a heated Pomfret Planning Committee meeting this week that the community could become a magnet for intensive off-road vehicle activity along Class 4 roads, the Valley News reported.
The Woodstock Inn filed an Act 250 land use application with the state on March 23 to adapt the ski area during the summer into an off-road driving school for Ford Bronco owners. It would have been one of four driving schools around the country operated by Adventure ORX, the newspaper reported.
“So that you hear it from me first, we have heard the Pomfret residents, and are very much aligned with the concerns of our neighbors, friends and family,” Tim Reiter, general manager of Suicide Six, posted on the Pomfret Listserv on Tuesday afternoon. The senior management team met with the stakeholders “and have taken active steps and advised Adventure ORX to withdraw their state and local permit applications,” he said.
