WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A woman who may have reentered a burning home in Rhode Island on Thursday morning to find a dog has died, officials said.

Firefighters responded to the Warwick home at about 8:45 a.m., Chief Peter McMichael said.

Although the second-floor fire was quickly doused, firefighters who entered the home found the victim inside, he said.

She was taken to Kent Hospital where she was pronounced dead, McMichael said.

It appears she might have escaped the house but then gone back to rescue a dog, which was also found dead in the home. Several others who lived in the home made it out safely.

The victim’s name was not released. The cause remains under investigation.
