WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - Authorities continue to investigate the death of a man in a fire at a Westerly home last weekend.

The victim of the Saturday night fire was identified by police as Connell Coffey, 52. He was found inside the home after the flames were extinguished.

Firefighters, EMTs and police responded to a full working structure fire at his home around 7 p.m.

“The fire appeared to have started in one of the bedrooms and the deceased was located in the area of the living room,” police Chief Shawn Lacey told The Sun. “The medical examiner removed the body and will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.”

Local firefighters were assisted by volunteers with the North Stonington, Charlestown-Richmond and Ashaway fire departments.

The house sustained significant damage, authorities said.

The cause remains under investigation with the assistance of the state Fire Marshal.
