CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina parks agency is trying to improve facility access for people with disabilities by looking to others to help generate ideas.
Charleston County Parks is creating an Accessibility Advisory Committee.
WCSC-TV reports that Steve Hutton, the parks recreation director and Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator, said the agency hired a group in 2019 to evaluate its accessibility for people with disabilities and received recommendations such as updating garbage cans and signs.
Hutton said he hopes this new advisory committee can identify other changes or programs that could be launched to improve accessibility.
“We’re looking for people with disabilities themselves. Obviously, we would welcome applications from family or caregivers as well. And then, we certainly hope to have representation from at least one medical or health care professional or recreation therapist or physical therapist who works with disabilities,” Hutton said.
