RICHMOND — Washington wide receiver Curtis Samuel was placed on the NFL’s Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list Tuesday, a day before the team’s first training camp practice.
Samuel, the team’s biggest offseason signing, dealt with a groin injury in June that prevented him from taking the field during the team’s mandatory minicamp. Coach Ron Rivera said at the time he wasn’t overly concerned about the injury.
But Samuel will now have to come off the list in order to practice. He can rehab to the side with trainers in the meantime, though the injury is an unfortunate setback for Washington — who hopes Samuel’s speed will add another dynamic to its offense.
Washington signed Samuel to a three-year, $34.5 million contract in March, luring him away from the Carolina Panthers.
Samuel’s trip to the PUP list was one of many roster moves for Washington on Tuesday. The team also designated cornerback Greg Stroman on PUP and placed right tackle Cornelius Lucas on the COVID-19 reserve list. That means Lucas, expected to compete for a starting spot, either tested positive for the virus or was exposed to someone who had it.
Safety Deshazor Everett and defensive tackle Tim Settle were put on the “Non-Football Illness” to begin camp. Defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence was labeled with a “Non-Football Injury.”
Tight end Tyrone Swoopes and guard Najee Toran failed to show up for camp and were designated on the “Did Not Report” list. The team, too, waived two players: Defensive tackle Jalen Jenkins (injury) and tight end Deon Yelder.
Safety Landon Collins, meanwhile, was not placed on any list — meaning he should be good to go nine months removed from suffering a season-ending Achilles tear.
