OPINION:
There was little to no observance of Native American Heritage Month in November because of the midterm elections and the senseless gun violence at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, and the University of Virginia.
This makes me wonder: If something similar had occurred in months honoring Black history, Hispanic heritage or the LGBTQ+ community, and there had been virtually no mention of it in the media, would there be the same systemic desensitization?
But as a tribal member in one of the 11 recognized Virginia state tribes, the Patawomeck, rooted in the White Oak community on the Potomac River in southeastern Stafford County, I am tremendously proud to be offering this belated November tribute to all in the indigenous community — in spite of the fact that is being conducted in December.
