The Washington Commanders unveiled two options for their new fight song Tuesday, asking fans to vote for their preference.
The lyrics and the tune closely resemble the team’s old song, “Hail to the Redskins,” but have been tweaked to match the new moniker. Fans can vote online on the team’s website to determine the winner and have until Aug. 6 to do so.
The main difference beyond swapping the retired name for Commanders is that “Braves on the Warpath!” has been changed to either “Fight of our Commanders!” or “Leaders on a mission!” — depending on the version. In both, “Sons of Wash-ing-ton- has also been changed to “All of Wash-ing-ton.”
The Commanders announced in May that the team would be introducing a “revamped arrangement” of the original fight song, along with bringing back the team’s marching band.
After voting closes in early August, the Commanders’ marching band will premiere the new fight song during the team’s first preseason game on Aug. 13. That same day, the Commanders will also reveal the options for their new mascot, with fans allowed to vote for the final choice as well.
Fans can listen to the two renditions of the song before voting.
The Commanders said in a press release that they collaborated with the grandchildren of District native Barnee Breeskin, who helped craft the melody for the original fight song in 1937.
“Our first season as the Commanders is all about connecting our past and present and we are excited to work closely with fans to help bring back these traditions under a new banner and combine them with new traditions fans will help to create,” team president Jason Wright said in a statement.
