OPINION:
In the vast landscape of the world, America stands as a beacon of hope — a place where the tired, poor, and oppressed can find refuge and a chance to build a new life. I am one of those people who sought shelter under the stars and stripes and found freedom and protection when I was most vulnerable. My journey to America is marked by gratitude, a profound appreciation for a land that opened its arms to me when I was oppressed and weak.
My patriotism as an American citizen who found refuge in this wonderful land does not come from a supremacist or elitist point of view but from deep and genuine gratitude. There is a significant difference between these two forms of patriotism. Healthy patriotism builds, contributes, and adds value to the land one lives in.

As it says in Jeremiah 29:7, “Seek the welfare of the land where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” This verse reminds us that loving and contributing to the well-being of our land benefits everyone. True patriotism is aligned with righteousness, aiming to elevate the nation through love and service.
My journey to freedom
Coming from a world where my voice was stifled and my body battered, America represented a sanctuary. In the Middle East, I faced the brutal reality of being beaten by my Muslim husband, with local authorities offering little more than the suggestion to return to my abuser or face destitution. Yet, in America, when I needed protection, law enforcement arrived within seconds, embodying the principles of justice and protection that define this nation.
Here, I found not just safety but a community of diverse people from all corners of the globe — Chinese, Turkish, Italians, Cubans, Mexicans, British, Norwegians, and Africans — all contributing to the rich mosaic that makes America unique. This diversity is America’s strength, a beautiful tapestry of cultures and traditions that enriches the soul of the nation.
A heartfelt gratitude
My heart swells with gratitude for America, a land that has provided shelter and opportunity, a place where dreams are not only allowed but encouraged to flourish. I love America because she is a defender of the weak, offering a hand to those in need and standing up for justice and freedom. This country is not perfect, and it has its share of struggles and a complicated history. Yet, it is precisely the willingness to confront and overcome these challenges that makes America resilient and admirable.
Honoring those who serve
Many times, I find myself thanking military personnel for their service to our country. Hearing my accent, they often seem confused, perhaps wondering why someone who wasn’t born here expresses such heartfelt appreciation. But it is precisely because I wasn’t born here that I understand the profound gift that freedom is. The sacrifices made by those who serve in the military are not lost on me; they are the guardians of the ideals that make America special.
Each time I express my gratitude, it is a reminder that freedom is not free, and it is upheld by the bravery and dedication of those who wear the uniform. Their service ensures that America remains a sanctuary for those seeking liberty and justice.

A nation united
America is not without its problems — we face trials and have a history marked by both triumph and turmoil. We have obstacles to overcome, but when united, we are undefeated. Patriotism is not blind allegiance; it is a deep love for a country that stands for justice, freedom, and protection for people from all over the world.
I love America because it provided me a home, a place where I could rebuild and thrive. Despite its imperfections, this land strives for a better tomorrow. This is the America I know and cherish, a nation that welcomes the weary and lifts up the downtrodden. Let us never forget the beauty of our shared journey and the strength we possess when we stand together as one.
As we move forward, let us remember that our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power. America’s greatness lies not in its perfection but in its pursuit of progress and justice. Together, let us work to preserve the ideals that make this country a sanctuary for all who seek freedom and opportunity. Let us be the generation that leaves a legacy of hope and healing, a testament to the enduring spirit of a nation that embraces all who call it home.
