A 60-year-old North Carolina man was found dead in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park this week, the sixth person to die there in less than a month.
He was trying to hike the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop, according to the National Park Service.
The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received reports Tuesday that the man, who hasn’t been publicly identified by officials, had not checked in with family. The next day, a park service helicopter found his body between the Lower Tapeats and Deer Creek campsites, park officials said in a release Thursday.
A investigation of the death by park officials and the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office in Arizona regarding is ongoing.
So far in 2024, the North Carolina hiker was the 14th person to die at Grand Canyon National Park, park officials told The Associated Press. There were 11 deaths there in 2023, and the park typically sees 10 to 15 people die each year.
