OPINION:
It’s not just Virginia, and you can’t single out Gov. Glenn Youngkin (“Loverro: Keeping Leonsis and his teams may cost District any chance of landing Commanders,” web, March 28). The politics of sports team relocations is a mess — or more specifically, the public funding aspect of it is a mess.
Whether it’s the Alexandria, Virginia, area with the Capitals and the Wizards or Las Vegas with the A’s, there’s no way to win as far as timing. Announce the proposed move too soon, and you give opponents a chance to mobilize or file legal actions. Wait too long, and people’s knee-jerk reaction is to reject it because they weren’t consulted (it’s considered the ever-unpopular “backroom deal”).
What ever happened to the bigger picture? The opportunity to land a major professional sports team is a rare event, and its full value shouldn’t be measured by financial spreadsheets or risk-averse local legislatures.
