Cal Thomas is shocked — just shocked — at Donald Trump’s use of a four-letter word during a rally on the Jersey Shore last Saturday (“Trump undermines himself with crude language,” web, May 13). Mocking President Biden’s fatuous claim of a good economy, Mr. Trump called this “BS” (but in full).

Far from diminishing Mr. Trump, the phrase got a raucous echo from the 100,000-strong crowd, whose members chanted it with glee. Their reaction lent credence to Mr. Trump’s boast that in November he will win New Jersey, one of the nation’s deepest-blue states.

Mr. Thomas does not mention the crude, unladylike language heard a week ago from Vice President Kamala Harris (“Harris drops the f-bomb while addressing young Asian Americans,” web, May 13). Could this be a double standard, finding fault with the political right but not with the left? If so, here’s another one: Do large crowds also gather at left-wing rallies, and do they echo the left’s naughty words, too?

It seems “We, the People” have minds of our own after all.
