The Louisville Metro Police Department will investigate the circumstances of the arrest of golfer Scottie Scheffler, Mayor Craig Greenberg said at a press conference Tuesday.

Mr. Scheffler was arrested at the city’s Valhalla Golf Club Friday after failing to stop his car when asked to by a cop, who hung onto the vehicle as it drove away. The police were there stopping traffic because a tournament vendor died after being struck by a bus an hour before Mr. Scheffler arrived ahead of the PGA Championship’s second round.

Mr. Scheffler, who has been charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic, got out of jail in time to hit the links. He ended up finishing tied for eighth at the major tournament.

Part of the LMPD investigation will revolve around the lack of body camera footage from Bryan Gillis, the officer who said he was dragged and injured in the incident.

“I understand why the body cam may not have been turned on at the initial contact between Officer Gillis and Mr. Scheffler. I still have questions about why it was not on during Mr. Scheffler’s arrest. Again, the chief will address that more fully,” Mayor Greenberg said.

Footage from a camera across the street from the golf club is slated to be released this week, Mr. Greenberg said. LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel has said the department will provide an update Thursday.

“The internal investigation is still ongoing. Any policy violations that are revealed through the course of the investigation will be appropriately addressed according to LMPD’s disciplinary protocol,” Chief Gwinn-Villaroel said in a statement, according to Louisville’s Courier Journal.

Mr. Scheffler’s arraignment, originally set for Tuesday, has been moved to June 3 following a motion by his attorney, Steve Romines.
