I am strongly opposed to the inclusion of Title XII, Section 12007, in the House’s proposed farm bill, which seeks to undermine state agriculture laws such as California’s Proposition 12. This section poses a significant threat to the ethical progress made in animal welfare and state sovereignty over agricultural standards.

California’s Proposition 12, which passed with overwhelming support, mandates minimum space requirements for farm animals, ensuring more humane treatment. It reflects the values and ethical standards that we as a society strive to uphold. Title XII, Section 12007, aims to nullify such state and local laws, erasing the advancements we have made in animal welfare, food safety and environmental sustainability.

This provision in the farm bill is reminiscent of the failed EATS Act and King Amendments, which similarly attempted to override states’ rights and impose industrial farming practices nationwide. Such measures not only compromise animal welfare but also prioritize corporate profits over the well-being of our communities and farmers.

It is disheartening to see Congress consider legislation that disregards the will of the people and the democratic processes through which these state laws were enacted. I urge readers to contact their representatives to oppose Title XII, Section 12007, and protect our states’ rights to enforce their agricultural standards.
