Meryl Streep said she is happy to see an older woman leading a Hollywood movie during a press conference in Japan for “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” multiple news outlets report.
The 76-year-old Oscar winner said women over 50 tend to “disappear into the woodwork” in Hollywood, with their “interests and opinions less valued in our culture.” This makes her role as a powerful and influential woman both rare and meaningful, she said.
Ms. Streep is reprising her role as Miranda Priestly alongside Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci in “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which is set for national release on Friday.
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” follows Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of the fictional fashion magazine Runway, as she navigates her career amid the decline of traditional publishing. Ms. Streep received an Oscar nomination for her role in the first film.
The films are based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 roman à clef of the same name.
