King Charles III of Great Britain on Tuesday acknowledged the attack on the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner during his speech before a joint meeting of Congress.
Speaking in the House chamber, Charles said the attack carried out by a gunman Saturday night in Washington “sought to harm the leadership of your nation and foment wide fear and discord.”
“Let me say with unshakeable resolve: such acts of violence will never succeed. Whatever differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries,” he said.
A shooting occurred during the swanky dinner at the Washington Hilton. President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and members of the Cabinet were evacuated by the Secret Service.
A law enforcement officer was shot during the incident, but was struck in his bulletproof vest and was only briefly hospitalized.
The suspect in the shooting, 31-year-old Cole Allen, was charged Monday with attempting to assassinate Mr. Trump, transporting a firearm or ammunition in interstate commerce with the intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. He did not enter a plea.
