The Commanders have ended one training camp battle. Undrafted rookie Drew Stevens is expected to be the team’s starting kicker, as the Commanders planned to release veteran Jake Moody, sources familiar with the move confirmed on Monday.

Washington will use the open roster spot to add 30-year-old running back Craig Reynolds, who spent the bulk of the past five seasons with the Detroit Lions.

Moody, 26, converted 10 of his 11 field goal attempts for the Commanders after joining the franchise midway through the 2025 season. He made all but one of his 11 point-after tries.

But the former Chicago Bear and San Francisco 49er failed to impress during training camp. He lacked consistency and failed to match the range of Stevens, who signed with Washington in May.

Stevens, a 22-year-old Iowa product, converted 80% of his field goal attempts in college. He’s consistently impressed throughout training camp, easily sending kicks from up to 60 yards away through the uprights. Stevens made both of his kicks — an extra point and a 41-yard field goal — during Friday’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins.

Reynolds provides an extra body in the running back room as veteran Jeremy McNichols recovers from a quad injury. Coach Dan Quinn said Sunday that the “pretty good” injury would sideline McNichols for multiple weeks.

Reynolds, a Kutztown product, began his NFL career with Washington in 2019. He signed as an undrafted free agent, appearing in three games. He has spent the intervening seven years with the Lions and Jaguars, recording 658 rushing yards and 258 receiving yards.

The Commanders return to training camp on Tuesday following Monday’s rest day for players. They head to Detroit for a preseason exhibition against the Lions on Saturday.
