More motorcyclists have died on Maryland roadways in 2026 than in all of 2025, even as the overall number of road deaths has decreased, according to police data.

As of Tuesday, 51 motorcyclists died in crashes across the state this year, compared to 49 motorcycle fatalities for all of 2025, according to Maryland State Police data posted on the website for the state’s “Zero Deaths MD” initiative.

However, the overall number of traffic deaths is down. Maryland State Police data shows that 250 people have died on roads so far this year — 158 drivers and motorcyclists, 37 passengers and 55 non-motorists.

Of that total, eight deaths occurred between Aug. 10 and Sunday, compared to the five deaths in the same week last year.

In a Monday news release, the state’s Motor Vehicle Administration said officials “continue to urge motorists to ‘Slow the Fast Down,’” a reference to a recently launched anti-speeding campaign.

Year-over-year, there have been 17 fewer driver deaths, a 10% decrease; 12 fewer passenger deaths, a 24% decrease; and 15 fewer non-motorist deaths for a 21% year-over-year decrease, according to the state police data.

At the same point in 2025, 294 people had died, including 175 drivers, 49 passengers and 70 non-motorists.
