Construction began Thursday on American Express’ new global headquarters at 2 World Trade Center, as the 25th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks approaches.

The 55-story tower will span 2 million square feet and is set to be the final commercial building to rise where the Twin Towers stood until they collapsed in the Sept. 11 attacks.

The skyscraper will feature a tiered glass-and-steel exterior, more than an acre of outdoor terraces and gardens, and is expected to reach 1,226 feet upon completion, scheduled for 2031.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani hailed the project Thursday morning at the ceremony marking the official start of construction, saying it will generate 3,200 jobs and pump $6 billion into the city’s economy.

CEO Lisa Silverstein of Silverstein Properties, which has overseen the site since 2001, described the milestone as the long-awaited finishing touch on the World Trade Center’s rebuilding.
