OPINION:
The front page of the July 16 edition of the Washington Times directed readers to the Region news section on page 11, with the words “Visitors to Washington find Trump’s imprint on city evident.”
With anticipation, I turned to page 11, expecting to read about the improvements that have been made to statues, fountains, monuments, parks, safety and overall beauty of the nation’s capital. Instead, what I got was a sarcastic nearly opinion piece by the AP and “journalist” Gary Fields. It was better suited to the editorial pages of the Washington Post.
Nowhere in the article was there any mention of the many statues that have been cleaned or fountains that have been made operable after decades of neglect. The spin Mr. Fields offered on safety, the Kennedy Center, the Reflecting Pool and more were simply sardonic commentary reflecting his jaded perspective of the changes accomplished, in progress or proposed.
I expect more from what the Times allows in a section reserved for the news. Perhaps, at best, Mr. Fields’ rant should have run as an op-ed.
