A Maryland Transit Administration bus struck a FedEx building in Pikesville as part of a multivehicle crash that critically injured one and sent dozens of others to the hospital.
The crash occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday, the Baltimore County Fire Department said on social media, and included the bus and several other vehicles, one of which rolled over.
In an update Thursday, the Baltimore County Police Department said 12 vehicles were caught up in the crash, with 36 people requiring transportation to a hospital. The driver of the bus was airlifted with life-threatening injuries.
Two people were trapped after the incident, one in the bus and the other in a car. All patients were extricated from the wreckage by 7:18 p.m. Wednesday, fire officials said.
One of the motorists in the crash, Ayo Akinduro, told The Baltimore Banner that the bus and a car “were driving too close, hitting each other, going at the same speed.”
He said the two vehicles then veered into his lane, crashing into his car hard enough to deploy his airbags. While his rideshare passenger went to the hospital, Mr. Akinduro said he declined transportation.
Another witness, who did not provide a name, told Baltimore’s WJZ-TV that “the bus took out one, two, three, four, five, six, seven cars, took out the telephone pole and then took out the business where it sits.”
After the crash, first responders had to move bus debris to reach the trapped bus driver, according to witnesses.
“The bus driver was in there for 35 minutes. He was screaming the entire time they were trying to get him out,” Shanique Butler, who arrived at the FedEx building right before the crash, told the Banner, adding that he was airlifted once first responders freed him.
Police said Thursday that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
