To no one’s great surprise, Maine Democrats chose Graham Platner on Tuesday as their candidate for the United States Senate. The only other major name on the Democratic ballot was Maine Gov. Janet Mills, who stopped campaigning more than a month ago.

The man who is billed as an oyster farmer is a train wreck.

First, there was the Nazi Totenkopf tattoo, favored by concentration camp guards, on his chest. He said he did not know what it meant. A former girlfriend says otherwise.

Then there were allegations of physical abuse by other former girlfriends. Finally, there is the married candidate’s sexting scandal and presence on a hook-up app, where he poses semi-nude. On top of all this, there are his crazy posts: pro-Hamas, calling himself a communist and insulting rural Americans and a Purple Heart recipient.

The foregoing prompted the former political director of the Platner campaign to write an opinion piece for The Washington Post, stating that Mr. Platner was unfit for public office.

Any one of these could be enough to sink the average candidate for high office. That Mr. Platner has survived is a testament to expediency.

Before the volcanic eruption of scandals, Democrats thought Maine was their best chance to pick up a Senate seat this year, running against Sen. Susan M. Collins, Maine Republican, who is seeking a sixth term.

So, the party that calls President Trump a Nazi nominates a guy with a Nazi tattoo. The party of “believe women” is running a man who is credibly accused of treating women like exercise equipment.

If the Democrats had even a shred of integrity, they would be running away from this bird like a four-alarm fire. Instead, with certain honorable exceptions — such as Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who calls Mr. Platner a “creep” — they are falling all over themselves to embrace him.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, and Sen. Bernard Sanders, Vermont independent, are among Mr. Platner’s early supporters.

Rep. Ro Khanna, California Democrat and a rising star in the Democratic Party, has campaigned with Mr. Platner. More surprising still, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, New York Democrat and chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, are vocal supporters of the Platner campaign.

Democrats are so desperate for power that they will kiss a toad with a Nazi tattoo to take control of the Senate.
