A 12-year-old American boy swimming with his brother off the island of Staniel Cay in the Bahamas was injured by a shark on Tuesday.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a release that the attack occurred at about 3:30 p.m. The victim’s mother told police that he and his brother were swimming during a tour when the shark appeared.

The boy, who was not identified by the Bahamian police, was taken for medical treatment.

The police did not specify the nature or severity of his injuries, but said Wednesday he was in stable condition.

The police also did not say what species of shark is suspected of attacking the boy.

There were five confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in the Bahamas in 2025, none of which were fatal, according to the International Shark Attack File.

One of the incidents involved a February 2025 attack on two American women swimming in Bimini Bay. One victim suffered an injury to her right leg. The other suffered cuts to one of her feet.

Last August, a 63-year-old American was airlifted to the U.S. with severe injuries after a shark attacked him while he was spearfishing near Big Grand Cay, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said.
