Former NBA star Carmelo Anthony has chimed in on the search for a new WNBA commissioner who will follow Cathy Engelbert after this year.

“We have to protect the players. We have to protect them all across the board if we really want people to look at this league as the best women’s league in the world,” Anthony said in an interview with OutKick. “So, you have to be intentional with the players and the script. You have to tighten that and build that, and make them feel comfortable in the situation that they’re in.”

He did not clarify in his comments what the players need to be “protected” from, but in the current WNBA season, the league and its players have come under scrutiny, particularly with Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham speaking out against biological men in women’s sports.

Cunningham’s comments ignited debate on both sides of the political aisle and protests at games, with the idea of transgender athletes’ playability being discussed within the league.
