Congressman: Secret trade deal is 'disturbing attack on American democracy'

Rep. Alan Grayson got a look at the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement the Obama administration has been secretly negotiating and the congressman said Tuesday that it’s a scary document that has major implications for the U.S.

“It is easy to understand why this NAFTA-style agreement has been kept secret. The TPP is a disturbing attack on American democracy and sovereignty. It puts corporate interests ahead of American interests,” Mr. Grayson said.

The Florida Democrat has been trying to get the U.S. Trade Representative’s office to release the full text of the deal so voters can see what’s being negotiated, but the administration has refused. Instead, they allowed Mr. Grayson to review the draft, which is being negotiated between the U.S. and other nations along the Pacific Rim.

Free trade has been a rare area of agreement between the Obama administration and congressional Republicans, but many Democrats have balked, arguing that with the sluggish economy the U.S. should focus on developing manufacturing jobs here.

Mr. Grayson said the Obama administration should follow the lead of previous presidents and release the draft text.
