MONDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

*The afternoon practice lasted just over an hour and included special teams drills and reps from scrimmage. Coach Jim Zorn said the practice’s fast pace was planned. “That was one of the key reasons we have a practice like this — to have a high tempo, and I’m very pleased,” he said. “There were a few miscues, but I was looking for tempo and to be alert because we put them in a lot of situations today.”

*Second-year player Chad Rinehart took several snaps with the first-team offense at right guard. Starter Randy Thomas, who is returning from offseason neck surgery, has not missed a practice but is being spelled from time to time. “We have to watch Randy and make sure he doesn’t get overworked or sore during two-a-days,” Zorn said.

*Quarterback Jason Campbell threw a bomb to receiver Antwaan Randle El, who broke free and streaked down the middle of the field. The play turned into a missed opportunity when the ball slipped through Randle El’s hands.

1. On the transition to being in pads for the first time in two years: “It hasn’t been too bad. We had the minicamp and the OTAs and I kind of got my footing back and my technique. I felt like I really picked up where I left off, so I feel pretty good.”

2. On how the Achilles injury that cost him all of last season benefited him: “I was able to do a lot of upper-body [workouts]. It’s always tough when you have to sit out the whole year, but you have to make the best of it. Once that Achilles got strong, I was able to get back in the weight room. I felt as strong as I ever had. The foot gets a little stiff, but other than that I feel like I’m still getting off the ball pretty well.”

3. On what he has to do to make an impression during the preseason: “Just work hard and make plays. I think that preseason games are big for a guy kind of on the bubble trying to make the team like myself. When preseason games come, I just want to get out there and show what I can do.”

4. On how playing quarterback and tight end in high school gives him an edge on defense: “I know the routes that the tight ends are going to run. You know different moves and releases they have. If I am lining up across from a tight end and he makes a quick release move, you know it’s going to be a pass. I’m just trying to get to the quarterback and react.”
