An amazing river view, two wood-burning fireplaces and historic features all are included in an expanded Cape Cod on the market in Fort Washington, Md. With the feel of a vacation resort, the three-bedroom, three-bath home blends in with the tall trees in a serene parklike setting.

The original brick home was built in 1935, and an addition was constructed six years later. The home’s three finished levels are filled with Old World-style custom craftsmanship.

Located on a quiet street at 9811 Indian Queen Point Road, the house, on the market for the first time, is listed at $849,000.

The sweeping scenic views for those approaching the home are dramatic. As an added bonus, the owners are avid horticulturists - hence the beautiful gardens and landscaping.

The bricks in the steps and pathways on the grounds were recycled from a Civil War bridge, and a tall, arched entry door was salvaged from a Riggs Bank in the District and restored.

Guests are welcomed in the sunny foyer, where hardwood flooring starts and continues throughout the main level and the second floor. A set of double doors can be used to close off the foyer from the back portion of the home.

To the right of the foyer is the coat room, a small room with a window and a closet. This is a nice small space that would be perfect for reading.

The foyer opens directly into an expansive living room where a wood-burning fireplace surrounded by walls of windows is the focal point. This open living room overlooks and has direct access onto tiered decks and enjoys expansive water views.

There are built-in niches and shelves on just about every wall in this bright room, including a convenient built-in china cabinet.

A doorway leads from the living room into an updated kitchen. The owners were careful to preserve many of the home’s classic features and traditional architecture while making upgrades.

Stainless steel appliances highlight the eat-in kitchen. In addition, the owners added an extra-deep stainless sink and pale brown granite countertops. A large over-the-sink window looks out onto the front grounds. There’s also access to the outdoors as a door in the kitchen opens onto the side patio.

The other wing of the house is home to a private master bedroom, providing for one-level living. This addition actually was two rooms and can be used as a large den, if desired.

French doors in this room will lure you out onto one portion of the deck for morning coffee or evening tea.

Two more bedrooms are on the top floor and are accessed by stairs with a curving, handcrafted banister. Each of the rooms has spectacular views of the water, built-ins and ample closet space. In addition to views out the back window, the bedrooms have dormer windows facing the front yard.

These sun-drenched rooms also come with hardwood floors. On the way to one of the bedrooms is an arched entryway and small overlook in the hallway with a view of the foyer area. There’s also a door in the hall that opens onto the front rooftop, great for catching a breeze.
