How did you get started in real estate? I had made a job change that did not work out and found myself in need of a new career path. It was suggested that I get my real estate license (if for no other reason, so I could sell my own home if the need came up). I took the course and got my license but truly never thought I would seriously pursue it as a full-time career. After about five or six months, a good friend gave me the opportunity to sell their $1,300,000 house in Potomac, and from that point on I was hooked!

Greatest accomplishment in the past 12 months: I had the opportunity to work with a wonderful family from West Africa. Their two adult children had just moved here to be with them and to help them qualify for a mortgage. The problem was they did not have any money for the down payment. I found a wonderful program in Montgomery County that offered the opportunity to finance the down payment through the Housing Opportunities Commission. Our in-house lender worked with us on the process, and my clients were not only able to qualify to purchase their home, but we also were able to do so within the time frame that allowed them to take advantage of the first-time-homebuyer's tax credit!
Area of specialty: First-time homebuyers seem to be my niche at the moment. I am also a great troubleshooter, and this really helps when working with buyers who have complications because of financing or other issues.
Highest-priced home sold: $1,295,000
Most memorable house: I sold a home last year in the Mount Pleasant area of the District. From the outside, the home had the classic early-1900s charm with beautiful columns, porches and windows. The inside of the home, however, was a very different story! My client had lived in many countries around the world. Her life experiences and artistic flair were clearly evident once you passed through the traditional front entrance of her home.
The first thing you noticed was her love of color. The living room was bright blue with yellow sofas. She had tapestries from all over the world on the walls and hand-woven rugs on the floors. Upstairs there was an orange-and-green room, a monkey-inspired room, a brown room and, of course, there was a red dining room!
Several of my co-workers suggested I try to persuade my client to "neutralize " her home for showing. Once I got to know her, however, I could not see asking her to change a thing. This home expressed her completely as a person, and to change it would have been a mistake. I received wonderful feedback from most of our open-house guests. Most were thrilled and pleasantly surprised by the originality of my client's home. We sold her home in 30 days!
Worst experience buying or selling a house: I was listing a home in Potomac for my clients, who were downsizing. While their house was on the market, they found a cute Colonial in Darnestown, Md., that met their needs perfectly. It was a short sale, but that did not deter my clients, as we knew it would take some time for their home to sell.
Consequently, our offer on the Darnestown home was accepted, the appraisal and home inspection completed and the waiting game began. In the meantime, my clients' home in Potomac went under contract. Now, time was of the essence.
Much to our surprise, we received written approval from the bank that the short sale had, in fact, been approved. We were only weeks away from settlement on both properties. The listing agent for the Darnestown home began to get concerned when he informed his clients of the pending settlement and confirmed bank approval. He recommended that they start to look for a new place to live. When no effort appeared to be made on their end, he began to inquire further. Much to our shock and dismay, the sellers of what was to be my clients' new home had met with an attorney who had convinced them they could keep their home by filing for bankruptcy! We were kept in limbo for several weeks, with no word from the sellers or their attorney.
As the clock ticked down to the sale of my clients' current residence, we began to realize that the sellers had never intended to go through with the short sale and had only agreed to it to stall for time. They had never anticipated the approval from the bank to take place so quickly. They knew that by agreeing to the short sale they could continue to live in the house without paying their mortgage.
Our settlement day came and went, still without a word from the sellers. My client explored numerous avenues to keep his contract alive - all to no avail. Contracts of this sort are invalid once bankruptcy proceedings are begun, regardless of whether one is actually granted.
The only saving grace was that I had the best clients in the world. They did not dwell on the loss for too long and quickly regrouped to start their search again. Consequently, we found an amazing historic manor home in Gaithersburg, Md., that they fell in love with and now own.

Community affiliations/community service/outside interests: I am active in my community pool, where I was the social director for six years before taking over as the dive team representative. I also served on its board of directors for many years. I am on the board of directors of my daughter's diving club and acting registrar. I love to exercise and recently have been exploring the hiking trails near my home in Chevy Chase - with my dog, of course. I have two brown belts in karate and formerly was a body builder.

What kind of car do you drive? Sebring convertible
Describe your personal dream house: My dream house is a Southern-style plantation home with a wraparound porch and beautiful rolling lawn. The house would have modern features but have the architectural structure of the period in which it was built.
It must have a large, open kitchen with a family room and deck off of it. I like open floor plans - no boxed-up Colonials for me. It would be either white or pale, creamy yellow on the outside and of course have rocking chairs on the porch.
Hardwood floors are a must, and beautiful wood accents with crown molding and large windows that let in a lot of light. I want a master bedroom with a sitting room and huge walk-in closets. But most of all, a huge master bath with a separate soaking tub, shower and lots of windows.
It does not have to be too large, just comfortable and cozy with Old World charm. It really would be my ideal dream house if it also was situated on a beautiful beach with palm trees and a view of the ocean.
