Frazier remembered as a warrior in ring

PHILADELPHIA — Joe Frazier was remembered as a great heavyweight champion and a city icon at a funeral attended my longtime rival Muhammad Ali.

Former heavyweight champions Ali and Larry Holmes and promoter Don King were among those to pay respects at the private funeral Monday. Frazier, 67, died last week after a short battle with liver cancer.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson gave stirring remarks, asking fans to stand and “show your love” for Frazier.

For the only time in the more than two-hour service, Ali rose and vigorously clapped for his fallen rival. Wearing a dark suit and sunglasses, Ali held hands for assistance in and out of the Baptist church.

Phillies finalize four-year contract with Papelbon

PHILADELPHIA — Jonathan Papelbon and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a $50 million, four-year contract

The former Boston Red Sox closer received the largest contract ever for a reliever. He replaces Ryan Madson, who is also a free agent.

Papelbon turns 31 on Nov. 23. He had 219 saves over seven seasons with the Red Sox, including 31 this year, when he made $12 million.

Ducks claim Hagman hoping to spur offense

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Anaheim Ducks claimed left wing Niklas Hagman off waivers from the Calgary Flames. Hagman, 31, had four points in eight games with Calgary this season. He had three consecutive 20-goal seasons with Dallas and Toronto starting in 2007.

• The Los Angeles Kings placed forward Dustin Penner (hand) on the injured reserve list. He has just two assists in 14 games, his second straight disappointing campaign with the Kings. A four-time 20 goal scorer, Penner has just two goals and six assists in 33 games with the Kings. Los Angeles ranks 23rd in the NHL with just 2.41 goals per game.
