A security guard at the District's Hirshhorn Museum fatally shot himself Monday afternoon inside the building, prompting an evacuation of the Smithsonian-affiliated museum, according to museum officials and police reports.

The incident was reported about 3:15 p.m. at the contemporary art museum, which is located at 7th Street and Independence Avenue in Southwest D.C. along the National Mall.

Police alerts about the incident indicate that the man was found with a gunshot wound to the head inside the men's bathroom in a lower level security guard's locker room.

It is believed the man, who was working at the museum Monday, shot himself with his own weapon, Smithsonian spokeswoman Linda St. Thomas said. Visitors to the museum had no exposure to the shooting scene.

The museum was closed after the shooting.
