CHICAGO — The Cubs may be hanging on to Ryan Dempster for a little longer than expected. They placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list Monday with tightness in his right lat muscle.
Dempster, who has been subject of trade speculation the past few weeks, said it's something he had been dealing with since his June 5 start at Milwaukee.
Dempster is 3-3 this season and his 2.11 ERA is second in the major leagues despite playing on the worst team in the majors.
He earns $14 million and will be a free agent at the end of the year. With the Cubs rebuilding, Dempster, 35, has acknowledged that it's unlikely he'll be with the team beyond the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
• Scott Rolen was activated from the disabled list, and the Cincinnati Reds' third baseman singled in his first at-bat in the opener of a series against the Cleveland Indians. Infielder-outfielder Kristoper Negron was optioned to Triple-A Louisville to make room for Rolen, who had been out since May 12 because of a sore left shoulder. Rolen is batting seventh in the lineup Monday night.

Sharks announce McLellan will be back behind bench
SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson announced that Todd McLellan will return next season as coach. Wilson said McLellan and the coaching staff still were being evaluated shortly after the Sharks were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the St. Louis Blues.

Donaghy wins lawsuit over nonpayment for book
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A Florida jury awarded a disgraced former NBA referee $1.3 million in a lawsuit against the company that published his memoir. Tim Donaghy sued Shawna Vercher and her company, VTi Group, in Pinellas County civil court, saying he hadn't been paid. The now-defunct company published Donaghy's 2010 book about referees and the NBA.On Friday, a jury found Vercher's company liable for breach of contract. Vercher and her company were also cited by the jury for conspiracy to commit civil theft, civil theft, intentional infliction of emotional distress and tortious interference with business relations.
