Duke jumped out to a 13-5 advantage early on, but the Hokies responded. They took their first lead of the game on the 3 by Brown off the pass — with words of encouragement — by Eddie. That shot put Tech up 14-13 with 13:27 left in the half.

Duke used a spurt just before halftime to take a 31-26 lead at the break.

In the second half, Duke began to pull away. Seth Curry started a breakaway and finished it with an ally-oop pass to Mason Plumlee for the slam and a 38-32 lead with 15:15 left.

Then Curry, who finished with nine points, sank a 3-pointer from the wing to put the Devils up 41-34.

The Hokies got themselves within four points twice after that, but couldn’t overtake Duke.

“A couple of times, I thought we were right on the verge of getting a lead,” Brown said. “I know this team. Once we got that lead, I think we have enough heart and enough character that we would have kept it and we’d be talking about win.”

Instead, they were talking about another game in which they were right there.
