Canada pledges $17.5M in fight against Asian carp

TRAVERSE CITY — The Canadian government says it will spend $17.5 million over the next five years to help prevent Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes.

Silver and bighead carp imported to the southern U.S. decades ago have been migrating up the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Scientists say they could damage native fish species if allowed to reach the Great Lakes, which are shared by the U.S. and Canada.

Upper Peninsula blaze burns nearly 100 buildings, homes

NEWBERRY — Homes and cabins make up a third of the nearly 100 structures destroyed by a wildfire burning across more than 30 square miles of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, officials said Monday.

The lost property includes Pike Lake Resort near Pike Lake in Luce County.

The Duck Lake Fire began with a lightning strike last week and burned more than 22,000 acres, or 34 square miles, but was 51 percent contained by Monday, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Parts of Michigan are extremely dry and thirsty for rain. Fireworks and outdoor burning are banned in 49 of the state’s 83 counties, especially in northern Michigan.

The DNR said 95 structures have been destroyed, including 34 homes or cabins. No injuries have been reported.

BOISE — Hours after their plane crashed on a steep and snowy mountainside in Idaho, a California fireman, his wife and their daughter were airlifted to safety by National Guard rescuers.

The family was en route from California to Mountain Home, Idaho, when their Cessna 172 went down Saturday night, leaving them with head and back injuries, officials said.

One of them used a cellphone just after midnight to report that they had survived the crash.
