Whether you’re looking for a home with some old-fashioned Cape Cod-style charm, one with large and airy rooms, a place where you can entertain your friends on a summer evening on a shady patio, or just a location that will shorten your commute into the city, you can find all of these in one home in Arlington’s Lee Heights neighborhood.

The residence at 3641 Vacation Lane, on the market for $1,079,900, is within walking distance of shops, a grocery store and schools and close to commuter locations in Arlington and downtown Washington.

Built in 1952, this Cape Cod-style home has been renovated and expanded over the years and has three finished levels with more than 3,440 finished square feet. It has hardwood flooring in most rooms, crown molding, built-in bookcases and shelving, and oversized windows and glass doors framing views of the wooded backyard.

The grounds have been landscaped on all four sides and include mature trees, shrubs, perennials and grass. In the back of the house are a spacious brick patio, shaded spots for relaxing with a book, and play equipment for children.

The property has a brick driveway lined by low brick walls that leads into the one-car garage. A flagstone front walk leads to a flagstone front stoop underneath a portico entrance with columns. Traditional black shutters frame the first-floor windows, and dormers add interest to the roofline.

The front door opens into a foyer with hardwood stairs to the upper level. To the left of the foyer is a sitting room the owners call their living room. It has a wood-burning fireplace with a mantel flanked by windows on either side. At the front of this room is a double window facing the front yard.

Between this room and the formal dining room are columns and low walls with waist-high shelves for books, photos or art objects. Both rooms have crown molding and hardwood flooring, while the dining room also has chair-rail molding with dark gray walls below and lighter gray walls above the chair rail. The dining room has a bay window framing a view of the landscaped side yard.

On the opposite side of the main staircase are a full bath and a renovated kitchen. The kitchen includes stainless steel appliances, granite counters, recessed lighting and gleaming white cabinets. A picture window above the kitchen sink frames a view of the backyard.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the family room, which extends 25 feet from the front of the house to the back. At the back of the room, closest to the kitchen, is a breakfast area with a built-in banquette next to two glass doors leading to the patio.

The family room has walls of windows on the side facing the landscaped side yard as well as a double window facing the front yard. Low bookshelves line much of the family room, with taller built-in bookcases flanking the front window.

The main level also includes several closets and built-in cabinets.

Just off the off the dining room is a 12-by-23-foot bedroom or second family room with a double-door closet, a glass door to the side yard and walls of windows for plenty of natural light.

Upstairs, the master suite includes a cathedral ceiling, recessed lighting and floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the trees. Built-in shelving lines one wall of the bedroom, which has an oversized walk-in closet with built-ins and a deep dormer window. The master bath includes a glass-enclosed combination tub and shower, ceramic tile flooring, custom wood cabinets and a granite vanity top.

The upper level has three more bedrooms, each with a double-door closet and high ceilings. The first of the three additional bedrooms has a deep dormer window and a sloping ceiling, while the second bedroom has built-in bookcases. The third bedroom, the largest of the three at 10 by 22 feet, features windows on three sides overlooking the trees.

The upper level has a second full bath with ceramic tile flooring, a window and a granite-topped vanity. The entire upper level has hardwood flooring.

The finished lower level has recessed lighting and laminate flooring and includes a generously sized L-shaped area for use as a recreation and exercise room. Nearby are an 8-by-9-foot den or home office, a large utility closet and a laundry room with built-in cabinets and counter space. This level also has a door to the garage and a full bath with a combination tub and shower and a granite-topped vanity.
