A woman attempted to strike a security officer with her vehicle Tuesday outside the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, prompting the officer to fire shots, officials said.
Montgomery County police said officers responded to a report of shots fired at the campus around noon. No one was struck by the gunfire, Montgomery County spokeswoman Officer Rebecca Innocenti said.
The woman was stopped a short time later and taken into custody on Nebel Road in Rockville, police said.
A spokesman from the military campus said the woman was involved in a collision with another vehicle while leaving the complex. As naval security officers attempted to intervene, the female driver attempted to run over one of the officers, spokesman Joseph Macri said. At that point, one of the officers fired his weapon.
As the woman drove away, she also struck a security officer’s patrol car, Mr. Macri said.
No further information was available Tuesday afternoon.
