A Democratic candidate for Senate in Iowa was caught on video warning that if Republicans take over the upper chamber, Sen. Charles Grassley — “a farmer from Iowa” — will become chairman of a powerful Senate committee.

In the video, Rep. Bruce Braley tells the audience that if they elect him to the seat that Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat, is vacating at the end of his term, they will get “someone with your background” who has “literally been fighting tort reform for 30 years in a visible and public way on the Senate Judiciary committee.”

“Or,” he said, “you might have a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school [and] never practiced law serving as the next chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, because if Democrats lose the majority Chuck Grassley will be the next chair.”

The Des Moines Register reported Tuesday that the video was apparently shot at a fundraiser full of trial lawyers in Texas.

Mr. Braley released a statement on Tuesday in which he apologized to Mr. Grassley.

“I respect Senator Grassley and enjoy our working relationship even though we disagree on some issues,” Mr. Braley said.
