VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A special prosecutor says he’ll decide by the end of next week whether to bring misdemeanor charges against Virginia Beach’s mayor.
Michael Doucette, a commonwealth’s attorney in Lynchburg, was appointed last year to review votes cast by Mayor Will Sessoms involving clients of a bank where Sessoms was a division president.
Doucette told The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1MgT1Hv) on Tuesday that no decision on charges has been made.
The newspaper has reported that Sessoms took dozens of votes starting in 2009 that benefited TowneBank clients. The newspaper’s investigation found bank clients had borrowed at least $140 million and that Sessoms rarely recused himself from voting.
Sessoms has denied wrongdoing. He resigned from the bank last December after its policies were changed to prohibit senior management from holding elective office.
