DETROIT (AP) - Plans are moving forward for a dock and a fishing pier at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge.
The DTE Energy Foundation has awarded $25,000 toward construction of the dock and pier at the Refuge Gateway in Trenton. The future site of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center will be a hub for outdoor recreation and education.
Those involved say the grant helped the project to recently go to bid. The dock and fishing are to open either in fall 2016 or spring 2017.
Wayne County, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others worked for nearly a decade on restoration of the Refuge Gateway. Located on the river’s Trenton Channel, it was the site of a Chrysler manufacturing facility that was deactivated in 1990.
