CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Frontier Communications has asked the West Virginia Public Service Commission to rule that Internet provider Citynet has no right to use Frontier’s network to expand broadband service to its customers.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports (https://bit.ly/1Qkeio6 ) the dispute could affect Internet prices and service in West Virginia.
Frontier says it has no obligation to lease unused fiber-optic cable to its competitors if those companies use it to provide high-speed Internet to their customers.
Frontier contends that Federal Communication Commission regulations don’t require companies to lease fiber to competitors.
But Citynet says Frontier has misinterpreted the FCC order. Citynet says it should be allowed to lease Frontier’s extra fiber to provide any telecommunication service, whether it would be telephone or high-speed Internet.
