ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s ethics commission reports registered lobbyists spent a record $243 million last year trying to influence state and local governments, up 17 percent from the year before.

The Joint Commission on Public Ethics says compensation in 2015 for retained and in-house lobbyists topped $206 million, up $12 million.

At the same time, expenses for related advertising rose to $17.9 million, while event-related expenses slipped to about $729,000.



The list of top 10 highest lobbying spenders was dominated by education-related groups. Invest in Education Coalition Inc. spent $5.1 million, followed by New York State United Teachers with $4.6 million.

The New York City and Vicinity Carpenters Labor Management Corp. spent nearly $3.1 million, followed by the Greater New York Hospital Association at $2.8 million.
