CAPSER, Wyo. (AP) - Gun owners will not be permitted to bring firearms into Casper City Council meetings after officials there decided not to change a ban on openly carrying guns at meetings.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/29jcAss ) that state law prohibits concealed weapons at public meetings, and Casper made it illegal in 2011 to openly carry deadly weapons to city meetings.

Second Amendment advocates argue that their right to bear arms should extend to council chambers, but the City Council decided not to change the ban after the issue was raised this week.

Mayor Daniel Sandoval said revisiting the ordinance would be reopening a big can of worms.

Sandoval and other supporters of the ban say the firearms could potentially stifle free speech and create an air of intimidation.
