JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi state senator who’s charged with aggravated assault says he has not committed a crime and he expects his name to be cleared.

In a statement emailed to The Associated Press late Friday, Sen. Chris Massey of Nesbit says authorities have distributed incorrect information about an incident Thursday in an Olive Branch subdivision.

On the day of the arrest, Olive Branch Police Chief Don Gammage said Massey was accused of hurting another man with a shovel. The 44-year-old Massey is a homebuilder. He, his father and one other man are charged with aggravated assault, and a fourth man is charged with simple assault.

Massey says the truth about the incident will come out in court.

The Republican has served in the state Senate since 2012. His free $10,000 bond.
