WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) - McDaniel College’s adjunct professors have voted to unionize.

The Baltimore Sun reports (https://bsun.md/215oRjt ) that the vote makes McDaniel the second four-year university in Maryland with collective bargaining for part-time workers. The union will also represent graduate students who teach.

The National Labor Relations Board says that about half of the 238 adjuncts voted, with 82 in favor and 36 opposed.

Pamela Zappardino, an adjunct who helped lead efforts, says adjuncts wanted to “have a voice on our campus that would be a recognized voice.”

McDaniel spokeswoman Cheryl Knauer says the school will comply with its legal obligations.

Maryland Institute College of Art adjuncts unionized in 2014 and Montgomery College is the only other college in the state with a union for adjuncts. The adjuncts are represented by SEIU Local 500.
