WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board has reached a $365,000 settlement in a lawsuit that accused officials of not doing enough to prevent a part-time athletic director from sexually abusing a Carver High School student.
The Winston-Salem Journal (https://bit.ly/2fTEOf1 ) reports that ex-Carver High School employee Herman Blount pleaded guilty in 2011 on a charge of felony sex offense with a student. Blount was accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student in a training room.
The victim’s mother filed the lawsuit against the school system in 2013, arguing that officials were negligent in hiring Blount and irresponsible by allowing school employees to contact students through cellphones outside school hours.
Documents obtained by the newspaper Monday show the school system’s liability insurer will foot the bill. Officials deny the lawsuit’s allegations.
