SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A group advocating for open-carry laws is being criticized for burning an effigy of Gov. Kate Brown outside the state capitol.
KGW-TV reports (https://goo.gl/bjtxb5 ) people at the pro-gun rally Friday hung a life-sized doll dressed in a suit, holding a sign that read “Keep your laws off our rights Kate.” A protester then lit the effigy on fire.
Lawmakers and other groups condemned the action.
Republican state Rep. Bill Post, who supports pro-gun legislation, said the rally took “a completely wrong turn.”
Oregonians for Gun Safety, which supports “common sense legislation” for guns decried the burning, calling it a revolting display of violence against a symbol of Oregon’s chief executive.
Burning an effigy is legal under free speech protections.
A spokeswoman for the governor said “hate adds nothing to civic discourse” and called the action misogyny.
