The D.C. Sports & Entertainment Commission delayed today’s planned installation of the playing field sod at RFK Stadium until next week because of the winter weather and the pursuit of a new sod type.

The commission now will install a thick-cut bermuda sod type designed to take root quickly and allow for play on the field within seven days. RFK must be ready for the Nationals’ April 3 exhibition against the New York Mets.

The sod switch will cost the commission between $150,000 and $200,000, but Allen Y. Lew, commission chief executive officer, said the RFK renovation project remains within the overall $18.4 million budget.

“This is a little different, but it’s going to allow us to play much faster,” he said.
