An announcement regarding ownership for the Nationals is not likely to come this week, sources close to the process said yesterday. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig is still weighing the pros and cons of three ownership groups, including a merged bid involving former Atlanta Braves executive Stan Kasten and the family of local real estate mogul Ted Lerner in which Kasten would serve as president of the team.
Selig also is giving strong consideration to a group that includes local businessmen Fred Malek and Jeffrey Zients and a bid led by Indianapolis communications executive Jeff Smulyan.
People involved in the bidding process had hoped for a decision as soon as Friday, but an announcement is more likely to come next week, sources said.
