SEEN AND HEARD

VIERA, Fla.

John Patterson was busy yesterday in the clubhouse showing off his prized offseason acquisition: a compound hunting bow. Patterson said his Matthews Switchback bow, which he uses to hunt deer, is set on 60 pounds but he will increase the tension to 70 when hunting season begins. Patterson brought his bow to spring training to get in a little target practice whenever he can.

“I haven’t shot anything with it. I got it after the season,” said Patterson, who let teammate Joey Eischen fool around with the bow for a few minutes.

Uh, John: How long have you known Joey, and what made you think it’d be a good idea to let him get his hands on a mammoth bow and arrow? …

Livan Hernandez had his best friend accompanying him in the clubhouse after practice — his dog, Blue. Hernandez’s dog is extremely well-trained and obeyed his owner’s every command. He said Blue is a malamute, but it looks like he has some German shepherd in him as well.

INJURY REPORT

Reliever Joey Eischen continues to be bothered by a sore left shoulder. He was able to long toss but little else yesterday. The Nationals medical staff said Eischen has a bad case of tendinitis. However, Eischen said he will throw his scheduled bullpen session today. “They’re not going to MRI me. I’m comfortable with their diagnosis and opinion,” he said.
