The girlfriend of Washington Nationals outfielder Jose Guillen was a victim of an apparent robbery on H Street in Northeast on Wednesday.

The woman cashed Guillen’s $12,000 personal check at a check-cashing business on H Street and was robbed at approximately 5:45 p.m.

Metropolitan Police yesterday would not provide any specifics about the incident other than to acknowledge that it occurred.

“The particular incident at 12th and H is an active case and it is under investigation,” said Officer Junis Fletcher, a police spokesman.

But yesterday, after initially claiming ignorance, Guillen spoke to reporters about the incident before the game against Florida at RFK Stadium.

“I was just sending the money to the Dominican [Republic],” Guillen said. “She’s got the money, she’s coming out, somebody got her purse, and she got robbed, that’s it.”

Guillen, who will make $4 million this season, demonstrated that he frequently writes large checks when he opened a drawer in his locker and showed a group of reporters a $10,000 check for cash. Guillen jokingly called it his “poker money.”

Police also would not comment on whether there were any surveillance cameras nearby that may have captured the theft, nor would they say whether they are exploring the possibility that the victim was staked out.
